The France Destination Guide is now LIVE!

France is known for its philosophy of joie de vivre, or the joy of living, and that experience extends to visitors, who get to indulge in French art, cuisine, and culture during a visit. It's for this reason that France is one of the most visited countries in the world. Paris, in particular, lures in travelers with its romantic reputation, dazzling grand boulevards and iconic landmarks, but the magic of France extends far beyond the capital. Across the country, medieval villages cling to hilltops, royal châteaux rise above the landscape, vineyards blanket the hills, water glitters against super yachts, and chalets host vibrant apres-ski. Each region offers a different flavor and endless excuses to return to France.

Speaking of flavor, France is a pilgrimage for anyone who loves to eat and drink well. Beyond the gastronomic haute-cuisine you'll find in Michelin-starred spots across the country, every region has its own culinary identity. Eat pastries in Paris, crêpes in Brittany, Provençal, herb-perfumed meals in the south, and comfort food in the Alps. That's all before you taste your way through the great wine regions: Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, the Loire. Whether at a 3-star icon or a simple neighborhood bistro, it's easy to find a memorable meal here.

France is also a dreamscape for anyone who loves beauty (in all its forms). From the Renaissance icons of the Louvre and the impressionist works of the Musée d’Orsay to the towering Gothic cathedrals and romantic Belle Époque façades, the country is overflowing with fine art masterpieces. Museums showcase centuries of artistic brilliance, but even the everyday architecture marked by Haussmann buildings or colorful shutters is stunning, and the landscapes ranging from flowing lavender fields to snowy alpine peaks feel like paintings come alive. Art truly does come alive with French fashion. There’s an effortless elegance to how people dress, shop, and carry themselves. Whether you’re browsing boutiques in Le Marais, admiring couture in Paris, or simply people‑watching from a café terrace, you can’t help but absorb a bit of that iconic French style.

All that said, France is more than just good eats on beautiful streets. There's plenty of substance to keep even the most difficult to impress travelers busy since few countries offer such a sweeping timeline of human history as France. You can stand inside prehistoric caves at Lascaux, wander Roman amphitheaters in Provence, climb medieval ramparts in Carcassonne, explore Renaissance châteaux in the Loire Valley, and visit the beaches and memorials of World War II in Normandy. France lets you move through millennia in a matter of days, and the history of each era feels vividly alive here.

Again, France is already one of the most visited countries in the world, so it doesn't need a sales pitch. But, many travelers underestimate just how much depth and variety the country offers. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a history‑heavy itinerary, a culinary journey, a family-friendly escape, or really any trip you can imagine, France can fit the brief and often exceeds expectations.
